Anyone who will listen knows that I think guitarist Mary Halvorson is one of the most exciting young musicians and composers working in jazz today. She produced the best jazz album of 2010 with ‘Saturn Sings’, my favorite 2012 jazz album ‘Bending Bridges’ and the excellent septet recording ‘Illusionary Sea’ last year.
Now she is back in a trio format with Michael Formanek on bass and Tomas Fujiwara on drums, in a collective called ‘Thumbscrew’. And the music on this new album is exciting and frenetic and challenging and fun … this is really MY kind of music, and it is an amazing record!
